Tesla to discontinue some Model S and Model X interiors to streamline production, says Elon Musk

Over the last few years, Tesla has already simplified its interior options in order to streamline its production, but now the automaker is about to further streamline its options.

CEO Elon Musk urges buyers to secure the interior they want now before they go away.

Last year, Tesla started bundling interior finish options for the Model S and Model X in order to create curated options and streamline its production process.

It resulted in buyers having fewer choices when configuring the interior of the vehicle. However, Tesla says that they are now choosing from pre-selected options put together using data from years of selling the Model S and Model X and curating the interior options.

After a recent update, there are currently only 5 color combinations that Tesla offers for the Model S and Model X interior and one for the Model 3 interior:

For the higher-end P100D version, there are even fewer interior options – only two, like for Model 3.

But now Musk is talking about reducing those option even more in a new tweet today:

By November 1, Musk says that buyers will have access to even fewer options for Model S and Model X.

Earlier this year, Musk actually said that Tesla will add more options next year – starting with a new red interior.

Electrek’s Take

Not sure what interior options they are going to cut here, but how much simpler can things get?

Maybe a better question would actually be how much better can production get?

We have been reporting that Tesla has been consistently producing about 2,000 Model S and Model X vehicles per week. It even surpassed that for several weeks.

It will be interesting to see how it affect production numbers next month.

Though it is probably not only about production volume but also to improve gross margins.
