As we reported yesterday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave a rare interview with CBS This Morning in which he is supposed to give the first look at the Model 3 production line.
CBS has been milking the piece over the last few days by releasing only excerpts, but they have now released the full interview.
If you have been following Tesla over the past few months, there’s nothing really new to come out of the interview regarding the company aside from a confirmation that Tesla has been maintaining a production rate of ~2,000 Model 3 vehicles per week.
The interview happened on Tuesday and Musk says that they have produced 2,071 Model 3 vehicles over the last 7 days.
He said:
We were able to unlock some of the critical things that were holding us back from reaching 2,000 cars a week. But since then, we’ve continued to do 2,000 cars a week,
Another interesting detail is that Musk agreed that Tesla might have pushed too hard for the automation of the Model 3 production line and that they ended up using too many robots.
The CEO said that they had to get rid of a complex network of conveyor belts that wasn’t working:
Yes, they did….We had this crazy, complex network of conveyor belts….And it was not working, so we got rid of that whole thing,
Here are a few images from the production line that were shown in the interview embedded below:
Another interesting quote from the interview was regarding analyst expectations:
The problem that people have, a lot of the analysts, is they kinda look in the rearview mirror instead of looking at the front windscreen. This has very frequently been why people have underestimated Tesla, because they would look at Tesla’s – what Tesla’s done in the past and use that as proxy for what we’re able to do in the future.
