Watch a Tesla-powered electric dune buggy accelerate shockingly fast in sand

As we recently reported, we are seeing more powerful electric vehicle conversions and custom builds coming out with a new startup facilitating the projects with refurbished Tesla motors and controllers.

Now it is powering a new shockingly quick dune buggy dubbed ‘Tesla Sand Truck’.

Electrification is coming to all forms of ground transport very quickly and after playing around with Nikola’s all-electric UTV and Taiga’s electric snowmobile, I think there’s a big opportunity to make power sports zero-emission, quiet, and more fun.

After fields covered in snow and rocky trails, you can now experience sand dunes with an electric vehicle.

According to the owner on Instagram, the ‘Tesla Sand Truck’ is using a Tesla performance RWD drive unit refurbished by HSR Motors.

With a rated peak power capacity of 475 kW (636 HP), it has to make the ‘Tesla Sand Truck’ one of the most powerful electric dune vehicles out there.

Here’s a good example of how quickly it can accelerate:

The vehicle is also equipped with a 22 kWh battery pack made of Enerdel li-ion batteries feeding the Tesla electric motors.

The owner says it’s enough energy capacity for  “25 and 30 miles on a sand dune ride” or about “20 to 26 runs down the drag strip.”

It has an onboard charger and if they need to charge in the desert, they use two 7K Honda generators which can charge the battery pack in about an hour and a half.

Here’s another video of the truck at work since adding the new Tesla performance RWD drive unit refurbished by HSR Motors:
