Maker of the Tesla Model S hearse is now making a Model S wagon

When we learned earlier this year that a group of engineers in Europe set out to turn a Tesla Model S into a station wagon, also known as a shooting-brake, and make it available as a mod, I suggested that it’s not unimaginable after another company turned a Model S into a hearse.

Now this same company announced that it is also working on a Model S wagon.

Amsterdam-based Coachbuilder RemetzCar is better known for stretching cars, but it was first introduced to the EV community when they unveiled their Model S hearse built for a client.

Now they are using their experience modifying the back of Tesla’s sedan through that project to build a Model S shooting brake.

Designer Niels van Roij wrote in a press release this week:

“Based on this extensive design research, we developed the brand DNA for the Shooting Brake. The conversion merges seamlessly with the Tesla base vehicle, whilst clearly communicating though form, design language and materials that this is a tailor-made Shooting Brake.” According to Van Roij, the essential elements of the theme that was chosen are its dynamic, bold profile with continuously flowing lines. “And of course we added a completely new sculpted rear-end, keeping the shoulders of the car alive, thus ensuring a bold stance.”

They released images of the design they are aiming for:

The vehicle was commissioned a year ago by Dutch collectioneur Floris de Raadt, but they plan to use it as a proof-of-concept to offer the modification to other Tesla owners.

They are on track to complete and unveil the vehicle in March. At that point, they plan to start taking orders.

Right now, they are only talking about a limited series production of 20 units planned, but it would still be one of the most ambitious body modifications done on a Tesla vehicle.

Electrek’s Take

Wagons, or estate cars, or shooting-brakes, are very popular in Europe, especially in markets like the UK and Germany, but there’s currently none with an all-electric powertrain.

As it turns out, the Model S’ design translates well into a sport wagon. We already have seen several Tesla Model S wagon renderings that were well-received and these new ones by Van Roij are particularly impressive in my opinion.

Now it’s interesting that two separate companies are simultaneously developing a Model S shooting brake. The other one being built in the UK was progressing nicely the last time we heard of it last month. They were aiming for the vehicle to be completed by the end of the year.

Therefore, we might soon get the chance to see not one but two third-party built Tesla Model S wagons.
