Tesla Model 3 fan configurators are not new, but a 3D developer took things to a whole new level with a customizable augmented reality version of the vehicle that can put it in your own driveway ahead of the launch… or at least sort of.
Apple officially unveiled its new ARKit platform last month at WWDC.
Developers have since been playing with the feature and showing off just how powerful it is with impressive demonstrations like a SpaceX Falcon 9 landing, Minecraft, a Van Gogh bedroom tour, and more.
Now Jelmer Verhoog, a Model 3 reservation holder from Norway, used Apple’s ARKit to put a 3D version of the Model 3 in his driveway and customize it.
The result is quite impressive and again shows the potential of the technology:
@elonmusk Couldn't wait 4 my #Model3, so made this AR app, what do you think? 😃 #ARkit pic.twitter.com/lIRLTZox7N

You can even have it drive around and activate the headlights.
The configuration is limited to the color, which is expected to be one of the only two features that buyers can change during early Model 3 production – the other being the wheels.
Verhoog says that he would like to release a version of the app for iOS 11, but it could be short-lived since Tesla actually plans to release the real Model 3 configurator during the launch of the vehicle expected later this month – something CEO Elon Musk is expected to confirm today.
