PSA: Tesla is discontinuing its Model S 60 and 60D in just 3 days – last chance

A quick PSA to remind readers that as of this morning, there are only 3 days left to order Tesla’s Model S 60 and 60D since Sunday, April 16th will be the last day to place an order for the company’s two least expensive vehicles.

It will change Tesla’s lineup significantly and while the company claims that it’s to “streamline the ordering process”, it looks like the updated lineup is in preparation for the imminent launch of the Model 3.

The Model S 60 starts at $68,000 and with it and the 60D gone, the Model S 75 will become Tesla’s least expensive vehicle at $77,000.

The Model 3 is expected to start at $35,000 and higher spec versions could go for about twice that – not unlike the Model S which has a price range of $68,000 to $156,000 until Sunday.

It would make sense for Tesla to create a greater price differentiation between what is being presented as a midsize premium sedan, the Model 3, and its flagship large luxury sedan, the Model S.

Interestingly, CEO Elon Musk said that the Model 3 battery pack will be capped at 75 kWh, which will apparently also become the base battery pack size for the Model S and X if nothing else changes after Sunday, which is not a given yet.

It actually makes sense for Tesla to “streamline” its options since it has 7 powertrain options now that the 100D is being delivered since last month. If again nothing else is introduced after the 16th, the change will bring down the number to 5 options.

In the meantime, it will make Tesla’s vehicles less accessible. Every tranche of $10,000 in the starting price of a vehicle removes a lot of potential buyers.

If you want to order a Model S 60 or 60D before they are discontinued, you can use our referral code to save another $1,000 – bringing the price of the Model S to $67,000 maybe for the last time? We have only 2 referrals left for the current round which ends on June 15th. We are giving away an Electrek hoodie with each referral and if we are first to 20 and win the Model S, we will randomly give away a set of Arachnid wheels to one of the 20 new Tesla owners who used our referral code.  Here are all the details of our giveaway.
