It’s a feature that Tesla owners have been asking to get for years: the ability to see how many Supercharger stalls are occupied/available at specific stations in real-time. Today, Tesla finally made the information available to Tesla owners through the map app on the center screen.
It’s something we knew to be possible since the automaker already displays the data of each charger stalls of its most popular Supercharger locations in real-time on the ‘Supercharger Dashboard’ located in its design studio in Hawthorne and other locations. It wasn’t available in-car until now.
Most Supercharger stations always have at least a few stalls available, but there are a few very popular stations and the feature will be useful even if it’s just for that one time it can notify you so that you can try to find an alternative route or charging solution to save some travel time.
Last April, CEO Elon Musk said that it was “coming soon”, but it took 10 more months. Apparently, it wasn’t a priority.
Today, some owners started reporting that the map app was updated with little bars over Supercharger stations to display availability. Here are a few images ( first screenshot via Electrek and picture via @LubertTheLou on Twitter):
It will be particularly useful during popular times for long distance travels, like during the holidays.
The new feature should ultimately help some people avoid wait times at Superchargers and work in tandem with other new features and programs recently announced by Tesla to improve the Supercharger network, like the Supercharger Credit program, adding more stalls to existing Supercharger stations, and the new idle fee.
Update: if you are experiencing inaccuracies between what the map shows and what you actually see at the station, like the owner below, it’s because there’s a latency. We hear it’s about 2 minutes of delay:
Doesn't work very well. I'm currently sitting charging at one, nobody here besides me, shows 5 out of 8 free. pic.twitter.com/vRW4sfaIN3
