Lamborghini is reportedly building an all-electric supercar on a Porsche Mission E platform

Lamborghini is reportedly attempting to dethrone Tesla for the title of the ‘Quickest Production Car in the World’ and it’s going electric to make it happen. Reports coming from Germany suggest that the Italian sportscar manufacturer launched an electric supercar program called ‘Vitola’.

Why are the reports coming from Germany? Because Lamborghini is reportedly building the car on a Mission E platform from Porsche, according to the respected German automotive publication AutoBild. Like Porsche, Lamborghini is part of the Volkswagen group, though not directly like Porsche, but as a subsidiary of Audi.

Porsche is aiming for the Mission E to be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and to reach a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). According to AutoBild, Lamborghini is attempting to get more out of the platform with a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.5 seconds – narrowly beating Tesla – and a top speed of over 186 mph (~300 km/h).

Based on the information it obtained, AutoBild came up with a few renderings for the ‘Vitola’ and it looks just wrong and nothing like something Lamborghini would bring to market:

And of course, if Vitola makes it to market, while it could possibly beat Tesla’s Model S P100D for the ‘Quickest Production Car in the World’, it’s not likely to compete in the same price range with Tesla’s all-electric sedan.

Nonetheless, if the reports are true, it’s interesting to see legacy automakers trying to beat performance electric vehicles by going electric themselves.
