While automakers like Renault and Mercedes are unveiling new battery pack options and brand new electric vehicle models at the 2016 Paris Motor, BMW is unveiling a new color option for its lineup of electric cars.
It’s kind of disappointing, but to be honest, I find the new paint job to be so stunning that I almost forgive them for not having anything else new on the EV front for the Paris Motor Show.
The German automaker’s EV plans are reportedly dividing the company’s management and we are told that the board is set to vote on greenlighting all-electric 3 Series, X4 and Mini for production any day now.
BMW has been offering a few limited editions i3 and i8 for certain markets for a while now. The latest has been unveiled today in Paris and it is called ‘CrossFade’ and it will become available at the beginning of 2017.
It was developed in collaboration with Lapo Elkann’s Garage Italia Customs.
Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, commented on the new ‘CrossFade’:
“Lapo Elkann is a pioneer in linking the disciplines of fashion, automobile and design. As a designer, I find this comprehensive approach particularly exciting. With BMW i, we have been successful in overcoming previous restrictions in automotive design through the use of entirely new materials. So the progressive expressiveness of the Garage Italia CrossFade Edition is perfectly in keeping with the BMW i3 and the BMW i8.”
The applied dashes of paint are triangular and gradually fade from Protonic Blue metallic to Protonic Dark Silver metallic.
