A lot of Tesla owners were asking for it, even Tesla President Jon McNeil is excited for the release:
Today, Tesla released, or more accurately re-released, a NEMA 14-30 adapter for the Model S and Model X.
Home Solar Power
It was available when Tesla was delivering lower volumes and it was discontinued, presumably because there wasn’t enough demand, but now it’s back.
Most Tesla owners charge at home with a dedicated charger, at Superchargers when on the road, or at ‘Destination chargers’ when staying at hotel, but when staying with family for example, the best option is often just a regular 120 volt outlet.
With the new adapter, they can use a common and more powerful electric dryers outlet.
“The NEMA 14-30 adapter will provide recharge speeds from 15-17 miles of range per hour of charge to a Model S or Model X. This outlet is commonly used for electric dryers and is convenient for charging at friend’s or relative’s home.”
Tesla attached a picture of the adapter on the product page and here’s also a picture of the typical outlet:
The adapter costs $45 and of course, you must use it with the Tesla Mobile Connector.
Current owners can definitely order it now and it doesn’t look like the adapter will be included with new cars. The mobile connector bundle that comes with Tesla vehicles include a NEMA 14-50 adapter and a NEMA 5-15 adapter.
