Tesla Model X delivered with dual front-facing camera housing hinting at Autopilot 2.0

Model X dual cameras

New Tesla Model X owners are reporting receiving their vehicles with a dual front-facing camera housing instead of one for only a single camera. The same housing has been spotted in the Model X before, but what is particularly interesting here is that it could be the first time that it was delivered with the second side exposed.

To be clear, only one camera is currently installed in the Model X, but it looks like it is being delivered with a camera housing made for two front-facing cameras. So far, the second camera housing – the one on the driver side – has been covered when delivering the Model X.

Now a Model X owner who took delivery two weeks ago had the same setup, but when he had his windshield replaced two weeks later because of an “optical flaw”, the new windshield he received was installed with the second side of the camera housing exposed.

Here’s the housing delivered with both cameras exposed and the housing removed from the windshield (via Tesla Model X Facebook group):

A dual camera configuration is expected to be part of the Autopilot 2.0 hardware suite and now the presence of the housing is sparking hope of a retrofit becoming available for current owners, but the next generation of Autopilot is expected to have several more hardware upgrades than the front-facing camera setup.

So while we know that wire harnesses are already present for a second camera in some vehicles, unless there’s a partial upgrade planned, I wouldn’t get my hopes up for a complete retrofit and the presence of the second camera housing could only be a question of timing in the supply chain.

Autopilot hardware upgrade aside, CEO Elon Musk has been recently talking about significant potential improvements to the Autopilot through over-the-air software updates, which is a great news for current Tesla owners.
