You remember the Hyundai IONIQ? The South Korean automaker’s one-car platform to release three models with different electric powertrains, IONIQ Hybrid (HEV), IONIQ Plug-in (PHEV) and IONIQ Electric (BEV). It created a lot of buzz earlier this year with hopes that the all-electric version could compete with the Chevy Bolt, Tesla Model 3 and other long-range electric cars coming to market in the next year.
We were disappointed when it was actually revealed that the IONIQ Electric will actually have a 28 kWh battery pack allowing for an EPA-rated of about 110 miles. Now Hyundai reveals the first pricing for the vehicle in Europe, starting with the UK, further confirming that the vehicle will actually be competing with the Nissan LEAF.
While the HEV version will start at £19,995, Hyundai revealed that the all-electric (BEV), IONIQ Electric, will start at £28,995 ($37,900 USD) in the UK.
It compares to the Nissan LEAF with a 30 kWh battery pack, which can achieve a similar range as the IONIQ Electric, and starts at £27,230 ($35,600 USD) in the UK. Both cars are also eligible to the £4,500 electric car grant.
Hyundai will also offer a PHEV version with about 30 miles of all-electric range, but it has yet to release pricing information since the vehicle will launch later next year.
The HEV version will become available through Hyundai’s entire network of dealerships in October, but the BEV version will only reach a selected network of 27 dealerships with a complete rollout in 2017.
CEO of Hyundai Motor America Dave Zuchowski confirmed earlier this year that the company will launch all three electric versions of the IONIQ in the US during the third quarter, but it’s not clear if it is still the plan based on the current international rollout.
