This morning a reader brought to our attention that the Tesla.fr domain, which is not owned by Tesla but is a premium domain in France, was redirecting traffic to the BMW i3 page of the German automaker’s French website.

The owner of the domain wasn’t listed on the WHOIS database so we contacted BMW’s global press team and the director of communication in France to ask about what they know of the situation.

We still haven’t heard back from BMW, but just 3 hours after contacting them, the website stop redirecting web traffic to the French BMW i3 page.

The Tesla.fr webpage now features a notice from web hosting and domain company 1&1 about the domain having been registered with the company:

i and 1

At this point, it’s unknown if BMW owned the domain and was purposely redirecting to its own website, but it’s more likely to either be a prank from a third-party or an enthusiast trying to bring attention to the i3.

Either way, Tesla should probably work on acquiring the website like it recently did for Tesla.com.
