Don’t judge it just yet! It’s not the prettiest Tesla Model S to look at, but it is awesome nonetheless. LEGO makes arguably the best and most creative toys on the planet, so of course it was inevitable for someone to make a Tesla out of LEGO bricks at some point. EV and LEGO enthusiast Craig Froehle did.
LEGO runs a website to share amateur designs and where people can vote on their favorite new sets. If a set gets enough votes (10,000), the company reviews the design and it can be approved for professional refining by its own designers and then move to production.
In his Model S LEGO design, Froehle included much of the same features that make the real Model S so special. The fact that those features out of LEGO bricks can be functional (to a certain degree) is quite impressive.
In the submission, he lists a few features:
- Hood opens to reveal frunk (front trunk), with included suitcase
- Swooping roofline with panoramic sunroof
- Front doors open
- Front door handles slide out and in
- Front seats recline
- Front center armrests slide back to reveal cup holders
- Rear hatch opens
- Optional 3rd row children’s seat folds out
- Custom decals on front, sides, rear, and interior
- And, just like the real car, it doesn’t burn a drop of gasoline!
Here’s a quick video of the set:
The submission currently has 37 votes. At 1,000 votes, Froehle will include a Tesla Supercharger in the set, and of course at 10,000 votes LEGO will review the design and potentially refine it and bring it to production. You can vote here.
Independently (obviously) but interestingly, Tesla hired a long-time LEGO manufacturing executive to lead the Gigafactory effort. Tesla plans on making billions of battery cells every year at the Gigafactory and LEGO knows a thing or two about manufacturing billions of unit. The company is estimated to be producing 40 billion bricks per year – though plastic blocks are of course significantly less complicated to manufacture than li-ion battery cells.

I would buy one now (if the design improves).
Let’s vote and make it to the market.
That will help Tesla brand and his goal of accelerating the advent of sustainable transport.
I hope Elon will tweet about this.. We might see 270k votes in 3 days! 😉
It would be nicer at 1:10 scale.
I wanted to ask, if there is also interest in additional Tesla Motors related projects on LEGO Ideas?
In that case I can offer links to two of my projects:

And a Tesla Model S (1:12): https://ideas.lego.com/projects/137948
(Sorry, if this sounds too much like advertisement, but I thought, that they are a nice addition).
