Tesla’s VP of Finance and Worldwide Controller leaves for Amazon

In just the past few weeks, Tesla lost 2 Vice-Presidents. Last week, we reported on Tesla’s Vice President of Global Communications Ricardo Reyes leaving the company, and now we learn that the automaker’s VP of Finance and Worldwide Controller is leaving to return to Amazon as VP of Finance.

Michael Zanoni joined Tesla from Amazon in 2014.

Before working for the automaker, Zanoni joined Amazon’s accounting in 2008 after an early career at Deloitte and Boeing.

In his LinkedIn profile, the executive describes his role at Tesla from 2014 to last month :

“Responsible for the global accounting, financial reporting, SEC and technical accounting and finance operations teams based in China, the Netherlands and the US.”

Tesla recently had a problem with its financial reporting. The company mistakenly added $173 million in value to its Supercharger network and had to issue a correction to its 10-K financial report.

The company’s finance team has been going through a transition during the past few months after Tesla’s long-time CFO Deepak Ahuja announced his retirement and former Google VP Jason Wheeler came on-board to take over the lead of the finance team.

Wheeler joined Tesla after 13 years at Google where he was Vice President of Finance and led Google’s global finance function. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Colorado State University, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Last year, around the same time Tesla hired Wheeler as CFO, the company also hired former Apple Finance Director Justin McAnear as VP of Finance, according to his LinkedIn profile.

More bad timing. The next financials call is going to be very interesting.

that is nearly 2 months away… analysts will forget about it in that time and will focus on Model 3.

I wouldn’t be so sure. There’s still a big cash burn that’ll be going on all this year and the Model 3 won’t be delivered for 18 months at the earliest.
