Nissan confirmed through a press release this morning the details of the 2016 version of its flagship electric vehicle: the LEAF. Information leaked through a dealership earlier this year already disclosed that the LEAF 2016 will have a 30 kWh battery pack option, but today Nissan confirmed the information and expects the pack to allow for an EPA-rated range of 107 miles.
The 30 kWh battery pack option is standard on the LEAF SV and LEAF SL models which starts at $34,200 and $36,790 respectively. Nissan also still offers the 24 kWh pack option on the LEAF S which is expected to have an 84 miles EPA-rated range. The LEAF S will start at $29,010.
Prices are before any EV tax incentives.
The new battery option and pricing structure are the main new selling points, but Nissan says they made a few other improvements to the 2016 models. Andrew Speaker, Director of Nissan Electric Vehicle (EV) Sales & Marketing had the following to say about the new features of the 2016 lineup:
“The new battery is just one of several enhancements for the 2016 LEAF. We’re also bringing audio and connectivity upgrades by adding NissanConnect with Mobile Apps with 5.0-inch color display as standard features for LEAF S models, and for SV and SL grades we are offering NissanConnect with Navigation and Mobile Apps–featuring a 7.0-inch color display with multi-touch control and Nissan Voice Recognition as standard features.”
The new battery pack offers a 27% increase over the previous generation and Nissan is rumoured to be working on a longer range version of the LEAF to be released in the next few years. The 2016 version should prove popular in the meantime with its new battery pack option surpassing the 100 miles mark for the first time.
The LEAF is assembled in the United States at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant.
