During the conference call discussing Tesla’s Q1 2015 financial results, JB Straubel, Tesla’s CTO, revealed that they were operating a fleet of “hundreds” of Model X prototypes. Generally, these prototypes, when testing on open roads, are covered by wrapping to camouflage the body in order to keep the final design somewhat secret. Today, a picture of a Model X with almost no wrapping emerged.
During the call Wednesday, Tesla referred to their Model X fleet as “release candidates”. They completed the beta prototype late last year and now they are heavily testing the vehicles for a release late in Q3 2015 and the start of volume production in Q4.
According to Tesla’s website, the Model X is sold out through early 2016. In December last year, Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla had over 20,000 reservations with deposits for the Model X.
