Audi gearing up for volume production of electric vehicles in Brussels

Audi sent out a press release yesterday to confirm that its upcoming all-electric SUV ‘e-tron quattro’ will be built in “large series production” at the company’s plant in Brussels starting in 2018. Surprisingly, Audi says the plant will also produce “its own batteries”, though without specifying if they are talking about battery packs or battery cells.

In order to make space for the new electric vehicle, the company plans to transfer production of the Audi A1 from Belgium to Martorell in Spain. Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, on the move:

“The model rotation will benefit all the sites of Audi’s global production network. The new model distribution will enhance our production efficiency and strengthen all of the sites involved. It will allow us to utilize further synergies within the Volkswagen Group and to bundle key competencies.”

Audi revealed that the e-tron quattro concept study (featured above) that was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015 provides a clear indication of the final production version.
