Tesla started rolling out a new safety feature called Dynamic Brake Lights in Model 3 vehicles in Europe to help avoid rear-ending accidents.
As part of its 2019.8.3 software update, which brought several different features to various Tesla vehicles depending on the type and the market, the automaker also pushed this Dynamic Brake Lights feature that is quite simple and yet could help prevent avoidable accidents.
Tesla describes the feature in the release notes:
“If you are driving over 50 km/h (31 mph) and brake forcefully, the brake lights will now flash quickly to warn other drivers that your car is rapidly slowing down.”
On top of flashing the brake lights in case of quick deceleration, the feature also automatically turns the hazard warning lights on for you.
The automaker says that they are turned back off automatically as soon as you press on the accelerator:
“If your car stops completely, the hazard warning lights will flash until you press the accelerator or manually press the hazard warning lights button to turn them off.”
So far, only Model 3 owners in Europe have reported receiving the feature as part of Tesla’s latest software update.
Tesla’s plan for a wider rollout of the feature to other vehicles and in other markets is unclear at this point.
It could be difficult for Tesla to introduce the feature in the US, where there are strict restrictions regarding what brake lights can do.
The feature has been in use in Europe by other automakers for decades now. BMW is amongst the legacy automakers offering it.
