Hyundai is preparing to introduce two new electric SUVs, the IONIQ 4 and IONIQ 7, filling two key gaps in its EV lineup.
Hyundai adds IONIQ 4 and IONIQ 7 to its EV lineup
The IONIQ 5 is about the size of the Tesla Model Y, while the IONIQ 9 offers three rows of seating, but what if you wanted something in between?
Hyundai is launching two new electric SUVs as it expands into new segments. One will sit below the IONIQ 5, and the other between the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9.
The IONIQ 7 is slightly bigger than the IONIQ 5 and aimed more at families, offering more interior space. The IONIQ 4, on the other hand, is a B-segment SUV that will offer an option between the recently launched IONIQ 3 and the IONIQ 5.
Hyundai has yet to confirm specifics, but Chris McKinnon, Hyundai Europe’s VP of product, told Auto Express to “watch this space” and to keep an eye out for more information on the upcoming B-segment SUV.
When asked if it will be similar to the Kia EV3, McKinnon said: “I really can’t answer that question, to be honest,” but added that the market was “important” for the Hyundai brand.
Like the EV3, the Hyundai IONIQ 4 is expected to feature a boxier, more SUV-like design than the IONIQ 3 and IONIQ 5.
Inside, the electric SUV will feature Hyundai’s new interior design, like the IONIQ 3. It’s also expected to have Hyundai’s next-gen Pleos Connect infotainment system.
We will learn more about the IONIQ 4 soon, but it’s expected to be available with similar battery pack options: 42 kWh and 61 kWh. The former provides up to 214 miles (344 km) of WLTP range. The latter gets up to 308 miles (497 km).
While the Kona Electric is still currently available in the UK, it is expected to be discontinued and replaced by the new IONIQ 4.
When it arrives, the Hyundai IONIQ 4 will likely start at around £25,000 ($33,000), or slightly more than the IONIQ 3.
The IONIQ 7 will fill the gap between the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 with two- or three-row seating options. It will be closer in size and price to the IONIQ 5, but with a boxier, SUV-like look. It will be available with dual- and single-motor powertrains.

An Ioniq "7" with a small, fold-away or removeable third row would be a great option. The 9 is BIG, and my family wouldn't need the third row except for when we're visiting family and want to go to dinner or a day-trip in one car.
No other details have been confirmed, but the IONIQ 7 is expected to offer a WLTP range of at least 400 miles and fast charging with an 800V architecture.
It will also be equipped with Hyundai Pleos and is expected to start at around £45,000 to £50,000 ($60,000 to $66,000) in the UK.
Will Hyundai bring either to the US? Don’t get your hopes up. Although Hyundai has not officially announced either model, the IONIQ 4 and IONIQ 7 are likely designed for the European market. We should learn more soon, with both set to launch in the next 12 to 18 months.
