Ford’s EV pickup adds NACS for Tesla Superchargers
With its official launch coming up in 2027, we’re starting to see more and more prototypes out in the wild for testing.
After the first test mule was spotted in Long Beach in June, we got a closer look at it earlier this month driving next to an Expedition.
Compared to the full-size SUV, Ford’s “midsize” pickup looks like a toy car. In fact, after reporting its second-quarter sales earlier this month, Ford referred to the pickup as being “small” for the first time.
In the company’s official press release, Ford said the Q2 sales drop was due to model phase-outs at its Louisville Assembly Plant, including the Escape and Lincoln Corsair, to make room for the “all-new affordable small electric pickup.”
Ford is upgrading the facility “to build the all-new, affordable small four-door electric pickup,” the company added.
As the first vehicle based on its new Universal EV (UEV) Platform, Ford promises the upcoming pickup will be considerably more efficient, smarter, and more profitable than its first-gen models, including the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E.
The platform will integrate a 400-volt electrical architecture and prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP ) batteries to cut costs and open up interior space.
Ford’s upcoming EV pickup will also be its first with a native NACS port, meaning drivers will be able to use Tesla Superchargers without an adaptor.
With its debut coming up, two camouflaged prototypes were spotted charging at a Tesla Supercharger.
The images posted on Reddit reveal the charge port is located on the driver’s side rear end like Tesla’s vehicles, making it easier to park and plug in.
Ford’s electric pickup is set to go on sale next year, starting at around $30,000. The company has yet to reveal battery specs or other details, but with a focus on efficiency and aerodynamics, it’s expected to have a range of at least 300 miles on a single charge.
According to Ford, the midsize pickup will have more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, and that’s not even including the front trunk (frunk) or bed. It will also have a lower cost of ownership than a Tesla Model Y, the company claims.

With an expected range of over 300 miles, a spacious interior, and an NACS charge port at an affordable price, Ford’s upcoming EV pickup might hit the sweet spot in the US.
Not only will it be one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market, alongside the Chevy Bolt and Nissan LEAF, but Ford is also promising it will be one of the most efficient.

America needs Ford to succeed. BUT the dealer purchase model creates incredible buyer friction. Almost no Ford dealer will have the economy of scale from EV sales to actually get salespeople or the dealer to actually care about selling the EV. I expect the transition to selling EV will be difficult. Who in the heck wants the ICE sales model of 6 hours to finally get an out the door price and then leave the lot? Based on my previous experiences with dealerships I would rather have my teeth pulled without anesthesia than even walk into a dealership.
Ford is known for its trucks, like the F-Series. To stay relevant as the industry transitions to electric, it will need to leverage its reputation to sway buyers from switching to brands like Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid.
