Tesla confirms having ~3,500 vehicles in transit at the end of last quarter

Tesla updated its production and delivery number results for the second quarter 2017 in order to include the vehicles in transit.

On Monday, the automaker reported having delivered 22,000 vehicles to reach lower-end of their delivery goal, but they are now issuing this additional statement on Friday:

“UPDATE: In response to questions we have received about the number of customer vehicles in transit at the end of Q2, we are updating our Q2 delivery release to provide this information. This information will continue to be included in all future quarters.

In addition to Q2 deliveries, about 3,500 vehicles were in transit to customers at the end of the quarter. These will be counted as deliveries in Q3 2017.”

The need to add the information came after some expressed concerns that Tesla was attributing the lower delivery numbers to production constraints while the company claimed to have produced ~25,000 vehicles and delivered ~22,000.

They attributed lower deliveries to difficulties ramping up production of its latest battery pack, the 100 kWh battery pack, but they said that the issue was solved in June, which resulted in higher production, but not all the vehicles were delivered in time to be included in the second quarter results.

Other parts of the production run in the second quarter were also dedicated to Model X SUVs for displays and test drive units, and updating Tesla’s fleet of loaner vehicles to deploy fully-loaded P100Ds in all service centers.

Nonetheless,  the vehicles in transit at the end of last quarter were fewer than during the previous one. Tesla had 4,650 vehicles in transit to customers at the end of the first quarter 2017 and those should have been accounted as deliveries during the second quarter.
