The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is back with sales now up 11% in 2026

Hyundai’s electric SUV remains a top seller in the US after sales rebounded quicker than expected. IONIQ 5 sales are now up 11% through April 2026.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 sales rise 6% in April 2026

After the $7,500 federal tax credit expired at the end of September, Hyundai, like most automakers, reported a considerable slowdown in EV demand.

While IONIQ 5 sales dropped 58% in the fourth quarter of 2025, they remained up 6% on the year with just over 47,000 units sold.

The IONIQ 5 ranked as the fifth-best-selling EV in the US behind the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevy Equinox EV, and the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

Through the first three months of 2026, Hyundai IONIQ 5 sales bounced back, rising 14% and outpacing rivals such as the Mach-E and Chevy Equinox EV.

With another 3,603 units sold last month, an increase of 6% from April 2025, the IONIQ 5 continues to defy expectations. Despite the Trump Administration’s policy changes, Hyundai IONIQ 5 sales are now up 11% through the first four months of 2026.

Although total vehicle sales were down 2%, Hyundai still expects to outperform the US auto industry in April 2026.

Earlier this week, GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, said the company remained “#2 in EVs” in the US behind Tesla. GM sold 25,900 electric vehicles in Q1, but does not report monthly sales, so we will have to wait until Q2 numbers are released to learn more.

To give you an idea, Chevy Equinox EV sales fell 7.2%, while Ford sold just 4,600 Mustang Mach-Es in the first quarter, 60% fewer than in the year prior.
