BMW’s new iX5 looks like a big upgrade next to the old X5 [Images]

BMW’s new iX5 is hard to miss with its distinct Double-X headlights. Here’s how it stacks up against the outgoing X5, side by side.

BMW upgrades fifth-gen X5 with the iX5

The X5 is among BMW’s best-selling vehicles in the US. In its fifth generation, it will be available across five powertrains.

In the US, it will be offered in gas, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and, for the first time, battery electric (EV) powertrains. Other markets will also see diesel and hydrogen fuel cell variants.

The gas-powered 2027 X5 40 xDrive is now available, starting at $72,100, but the electric iX5 won’t go on sale until November.

Ahead of its official launch next month, Bimmertoday posted several images of the new iX5 parked next to the outgoing X5 G05, giving us a good side-by-side comparison.

Although it still looks like an X5, the new iX5 stands apart with BMW’s Neue Klasse design. The new upright, slimmer BMW Kidney Grille replaces the old wide, chunkier grille design.

You can also see BMW’s new “double-X” light signature, which combines the headlights, daytime running lights, side lights, and turn signals into one unit. The Double-X headlights come standard, but BMW said you can turn them off for simpler diagonal stripes.

The new BMW iX5 60 xDrive will go on sale in the US next month. Using a 144 kWh battery, BMW said the electric SUV will offer up to 435 miles of range.

Last week, BMW showcased the i5’s fast-charging capabilities for the first time during a media event in Southern California with IONNA and Alpitronic. During the event, the iX5 60 xDrive hit a peak of 464 kW, which BMW said enables it to add up to 170 miles of range in 10 minutes.

The iX5 is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, delivering a combined 578 hp (425 kW) and 593 lb-ft of torque. BMW says it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and tow up to 6,000 lbs.

Inside, the iX5 adopts BMW’s Neue Klasse design, which includes a 17.9″ navigation touchscreen and the new BMW Panoramic Vision that stretches across the bottom of the windshield. Buyers can opt to add the optional 14.6″ passenger screen for a third display.

BMW’s new iX5 is 197.2″ long, 78.7″ wide, and 68.9″ tall, or about the size of the Porsche Cayenne Electric.

BMW will open orders for the new iX5 60 xDrive in November, starting at $79,800. It will be BMW’s first electric vehicle built in the US. Production is set to begin at its Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina by the end of the year.
