Volvo launched a software update that gives the EX30 new capabilities, including the ability to power external electronics with vehicle-to-load (V2L).
Volvo EX30 gains V2L and more in latest update
Starting this week, EX30 drivers will be able to use their vehicle for more than just getting from point A to point B.
Volvo Cars is rolling out its latest over-the-air software update, giving the EX30 the ability to be used as a power bank on wheels.
With bidirectional charging, including vehicle-to-load (V2L), the EX30 can power external devices, such as a laptop, coffee maker, the fridge if the power goes out, or even a campsite using energy from the vehicle’s battery.
Delivering up to 3 kW at 16 amps, Volvo said the system can power “a wide range of everyday equipment.” It can be used when needed, but once the battery level drops below 20%, the system will automatically cut off the energy supply to save energy.
How does it work? With a separate adapter, you can connect it to the charge port and then plug in the device to draw power from the vehicle’s battery.
The V2L functions will not be available for EX30 drivers in the US, Canada, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, or Japan. In the EMEA, APAC, and Latin America markets, it will use the CCS2 charging standard.
Volvo’s latest update also introduces a new user experience with a customizable contextual bar and redesigned settings menu.
In certain European markets, Volvo is introducing Plug & Charge capabilities for EX30 drivers. The ability streamlines public charging and eliminates the need for a physical card or extra app. It will only be available on 2026 models or newer.

Adding bidirectional charging and V2L is a big update for the EX30, a feature that should already be offered on all EVs.
While it is disappointing to see those in the US will miss out, it’s not much of a surprise given Volvo announced it was discontinuing the EX30 in the US after the 2026 model year.
Other entry-level electric vehicles, like the 2027 Kia EV3, will fill the void left by the EX30. The 2027 Kia EV3 starts at $30,000, offers up to 321 miles of range, and comes with standard V2L.
