Hyundai IONIQ 5 crowned the best family EV

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 pretty much offers it all with up to 318 miles of driving range, fast charging, a surprisingly spacious interior, and an affordable starting price of just $35,000. It’s also a perfect fit for families looking to go electric.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 named best family EV of 2026

The IONIQ 5 was the only EV to make Kelley Blue Book’s 12 Best Family Cars of 2026, placing alongside the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 as the best 2-Row SUVs for families.

The list consists of vehicles that are thoroughly tested and evaluated for real-world family needs, taking into account factors including safety, efficiency, and value.

Based on findings from KBB’s recent consumer survey, families want “bigger, more comfortable vehicles, but not at the expense of fuel efficiency.” SUVs remain the go-to choice for families due to their blend of safety, practicality, and affordability.

“The best family vehicles are those that can keep up with the realities of everyday life – whether that’s road trips, a busy weekend schedule or daily school drop-offs,” KBB’s managing editor, Sean Tucker, explained.

The selected vehicles are well-suited for small and large families, offering solid efficiency, low operating costs, and high safety standards at an affordable price.

All vehicles on the list have either a 5-Star NHTSA rating, are IIHS TSP/TSP+ vehicles, or have earned both based on their most recent ratings.

Affordable, safe, reliable, and practical

What factors make a good family car? When looking for a family hauler, KBB considered the vehicle’s safety, IIHS Testing, value, reliability and durability, driving experience, comfort and convenience, cargo capacity, and, of course, child seats.

After cutting prices on the 2026 model year by up to $9,800 on some trims, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 now starts at just $35,000.

While that’s for the Standard Range SE model, with an EPA-estimated driving range of 245 miles, you can upgrade to the extended-range trim for just $2,500 more.

The 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 SE RWD costs $37,500, but offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 318 miles.

With electric vehicles, how fast they can recharge is also something to consider for families that take road trips. Using a 350-kW, 800-V DC fast charger, Hyundai’s electric SUV can add up to 178 miles of range in about 15 minutes.

The 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 now comes with a NACS charge port, unlocking access to over 25,000 Tesla Superchargers.

Plus, it still comes with a CSS adapter for other networks, such as Electrify America and ChargePoint.

Prices and driving range

At 183.3″ long, the IONIQ 5 is about the same size as the Hyundai Tuscon, but with a wheelbase that’s longer than the three-row Palisade, the EV offers a spacious interior with up to 132.8 cubic feet of total interior volume.

The interior is also packed with Hyundai’s latest tech, safety, and convenience features. At the center are two 12.3″ integrated displays, one as the infotainment, the other as a digital driver cluster.

The infotainment also has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can connect your smartphone and pull up apps directly on the central touchscreen.

Hyundai gives you peace of mind with a limited battery warranty covering manufacturing defects of the vehicle’s battery for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The IONIQ 5 being named one of the best family cars for 2026 comes after KBB declared it as the “best-of-the-best EV” in its 2026 Best Buy Awards earlier this year.

As part of its new June promotions, Hyundai is offering up to $7,000 off 2026 IONIQ 5 models, or 0% APR financing for 72 months, plus an extra $1,000 off and zero payments for 90 days.

With leases starting at just $259 a month, the 2026 IONIQ 5 is among the most affordable EVs in the US. It’s even cheaper to lease than a gas-powered Sonata, despite costing over $7,500 more on paper.
