Iceland isn’t exactly known for doing things the easy way. Between volcanic terrain, unpredictable weather, and long stretches of rugged wilderness, it’s the kind of place that tends to shape products around necessity rather than excess.
And that philosophy is exactly what shows in Lauf Cycles’ newest launch: the company’s first-ever electric mountain bike, the eElja.
With the eElja, the Icelandic performance brand is stepping into the premium eMTB space – but doing it in a way that feels very different from the arms race we’ve seen across the rest of the industry.
Instead of chasing bigger motors and bigger batteries, Lauf is doubling down on something else: simplicity.
A lightweight take on electric mountain biking
The headline number here isn’t power – it’s weight.
At just 36.6 lbs (16.6 kg), the eElja is one of the lightest full-suspension electric mountain bikes on the market today. In fact, it’s getting dangerously close to the weight of some non-electric mountain bikes, which is kind of the point.
Lauf built the bike around a full carbon fiber frame paired with its proprietary LSP (Lauf Single Pivot) suspension system. Instead of complex multi-link designs, the LSP setup uses fewer moving parts and robust pivot bearings to reduce maintenance while keeping the ride smooth and responsive.
It’s a very Icelandic approach: fewer things to break, fewer things to maintain, and just enough performance to get the job done in tough conditions.
Suspension travel comes in at 140 mm up front and 130 mm in the rear, putting the bike squarely in the trail category. It’s fair to say it’s not a downhill bruiser, but something designed for long, varied rides across mixed terrain.

Modest power, natural feel
Powering the eElja is the TQ HPR60 drive system, a compact and ultra-quiet mid-drive motor that produces 60 Nm of torque from a 350W unit. TQ is also a popular drive manufacturer that we’re seeing more often on the lightest e-bikes introduced in the last few years.
If you’re used to seeing 85 Nm or even 120 Nm motors on modern eMTBs, that might sound underwhelming. But again, that’s intentional.
This isn’t meant to feel like a dirt bike with pedals. It’s meant to feel like a mountain bike – with just enough assist to take the edge off climbs and extend your ride.
The system is paired with a 360 Wh integrated battery, with an optional 160 Wh range extender for longer adventures. Lauf says the setup can support up to 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) of climbing on full assist when using the extender, which should be enough for most long rides where the riders’ legs still play a major role.

Premium components across the board
Despite its minimalist philosophy, the eElja isn’t cutting corners on spec.
Both versions of the bike come with RockShox suspension, SRAM AXS wireless electronic shifting, and high-end finishing touches like a carbon cockpit and wireless dropper post control.
The bike is offered in two builds:
- Weekend Warrior (US $6,990): Alloy wheels, high-end suspension, and full wireless controls
- Race (US $8,490): Carbon wheels, upgraded drivetrain, and premium suspension tuning
Tire clearance goes up to 29×3.0 inches, giving riders the option to run wider rubber for extra grip and comfort when conditions get rough.
And in a nice nod to durability, the frame is backed by a seven-year warranty.

Designed for more than just trails
Interestingly, Lauf isn’t positioning the eElja purely as a trail bike.
The company says the bike is designed to move “seamlessly from trail to city,” suggesting a broader use case than just weekend rides in the woods.
That aligns with the growing trend of lighter eMTBs being used as do-it-all machines – capable of handling singletrack one day and urban commuting the next. It may not sit well with the purest of old school mountain bikers, but then again, e-bikes are all about welcoming the new… along with a new batch of riders.
