Ram drops plans for a 500-mile long-range version of its electric pickup

The promised long-range Ram 1500 REV electric pickup has been canceled. Ram is no longer planning to launch the variant, which was expected to provide over 500 miles of range. Here’s what will take its place.

Ram 1500 REV long-range electric pickup is canceled

After introducing its first electric pickup in 2023, the Ram 1500 REV, the company said it would be available in two battery sizes: 168 and 229 kWh.

The standard 168 kWh battery is expected to provide up to 350 miles of range. Meanwhile, Ram claimed the massive 229 kWh battery would unlock over 500 miles of driving range.

After a notice to suppliers leaked this week, we are now learning Ram is shelving plans to build the long-range electric pickup model.

The supplier notice, viewed by MoparInsiders, states, “As Stellantis continues to focus on the launch of the Ram 1500 Ramcharger and Ram 1500 REV (BEV L), the company has made the decision to CANCEL the Light Duty RAM 1500 DT BEV XL (long range variant).”

Stellantis asked the supplier to “immediately cease all activities” and suspend spending related to the project. The cancellation only applies to the long-range version.

The Ramcharger is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pickup. Powered by a 92 kWh battery and 3.6-liter V6 engine, Ram targets up to 690 miles range.

Ram has already delayed the arrival of the all-electric pickup. It was expected to arrive by the end of 2024, but it won’t launch until 2026. The company is focusing on the Ramcharger, which will be available in the first half of 2025.

The new delay comes after Chrysler, another Stellantis brand, put its long-awaited electric crossover on hold earlier this week.

On the positive side, the first Jeep Wagoneer S and Dodge Charger Daytona EVs are finally arriving at US dealerships.

Electrek’s Take

Stellantis sales sunk 15% in the US last year, but the company continues to delay major EV launches. Ram (19%), Dodge (29%), Jeep (9%), and Chrysler (7%) all sold significantly fewer vehicles in the US in 2024 than the previous year.

Will the arrival of the first Jeep and Dodge electric models help turn things around? As Ram continues to delay, new EV pickups, like the Tesla Cybertruck and Chevy Silverado EV, are quickly gaining momentum.

Can Stellantis turn things around? It will need to start making progress soon or risk falling further behind its US rivals.
