Pininfarina’s Battista is a 1900-horsepower all-electric hypercar

Pininfarina unveiled its Battista all-electric hypercar at the Geneva Motor Show — a 1900-horsepower(!!) beast that goes from 0 to 100 km/h in less than two seconds. Will this compete with Tesla’s upcoming Roadster for elite electric hypercar status?

“The most powerful road-legal car ever designed and built in Italy,” the carbon fiber body Battista has an insane 2300 Nm of torque. The electric hypercar will have a range of up to 450 km (280 miles) using a 120 kWh battery pack from Rimac Automobili.

Pininfarina claims Battista can hit 186 mph in less than 12 seconds. Its top speed will be restricted to 217 mph. Automobili Pininfarina says that Battista’s “extreme performance” is “a feat that would simply be impossible to achieve with internal combustion technology.”

Electric Hypercar limited run

The company will produce a maximum of 150 Battistas — Automobili Pininfarina says the car will be allocated equally between North America, Europe and the Middle East/Asia. Battista should reach customers in 2020, and Automobili Pininfarina is already taking applications to own one of these hypercars. It should cost around $2.2 million.

If we’re only comparing 0-60 times, the Pininfarina costs about 10 times Tesla’s new Roadster for about the same performance. Tesla says its Roadster will top out over 250mph and seat 2+2. Also compare the 280 mile range of the Pininfarina to the Roadster’s 620 (!!) miles.

Of Battista, Automobili Pininfarina CEO Michael Perschke said,

“This is the most authentic and exciting automotive story imaginable. The Battista is the hypercar of the future, inspired by a legendary past. It combines true inspiration and innovation in its technical achievement and emotional appeal. Electrification unlocks the door to a new level of performance and a zero-emissions future, whilst a passion and respect for automotive history will define how this landmark car looks and feels. We aim for the Battista to be a future classic and automotive icon, writing its own page in automotive history books.”

Automobili Pininfarina Design Director Luca Borgogno said,

“The automotive world is ready to see a marriage of beauty, electric power and performance. It is this combination provided by Pininfarina SpA working shoulder-to-shoulder with us at Automobili Pininfarina that will make the Battista more than just a ferocious performance car and more than just a visual work of art. Styling, balanced with ultimate performance, producing a genuine Pininfarina: the beauty of power and the power of beauty.”

Electrek’s Take:

The Battista from our understanding is mostly a Rimac drivetrain and a gorgeous Pininfarina-designed shell and it will likely do very well in the elite hypercar market.

But it is hard to imagine spending $2.2M on this thing when a Tesla Roadster with more than double the range miles and significantly higher top speed will likely be on the market in a few years. In fact, for its supposed $200-250K price tag, it is hard to imagine buying any hypercar at all.

Still, those with a taste for Pininfarina aesthetics and deep wallets will love this car and its whiplash-inducing horsepower and torque.
