BMW has released a new video called ‘A glimpse into the future by BMW i’, which they used as a strange way to announce a new feature called ‘electricity dispenser’ coming to the i3.
Electric automakers are trying to find more ways to take advantage of the large energy storage capacity inside their electric vehicles.
Things like load control, vehicle-to-grid, and onboard electric plugs for tools and equipment are all being worked on by automakers at the moment.
BMW says that it is now working on the latter, which it is calling an ‘electricity dispenser’.
They released this video to give an example of what owners can do with the feature:
It was a somewhat strange way to announce a feature because BMW didn’t release any timeline or other details, but they said that “engineers are working on it”:
“The BMW i3 carries much electricity on board; often even more than what is needed for driving. This video shows what could be done with it. The BMW i engineers are working on it.. (BMW i3 as a electricity dispenser)”
If the feature is indeed coming to the i3, it could be in the 2019 model which could take advantage of even more energy capacity.
As we previously reported, BMW i3 is rumored to get a new battery cell upgrade to push the range ‘over 200 miles’.
We expect to know more about the 2019 version in the coming months.
