Jaguar to launch an all-electric sedan as soon as next year, report says

Jaguar is preparing to launch its first all-electric vehicle, the Jaguar I-Pace, later this year.

Now the British automaker is reportedly already planning to launch its second all-electric vehicle as soon as next year.

The I-Pace is an SUV, but the second vehicle would be a sedan taking the form of an all-electric Jaguar XJ, according to a report from Autocar.

They reported:

“Autocar has learned that the decision has been taken to replace it, despite the tougher market for luxury saloons in the face of the rising popularity of luxury SUVs. However, it is being replaced not with a like-for-like model but with one that reinvents the very idea of a luxury saloon as an electric car and can act as a high-tech flagship for Jaguar.”

The vehicle would launch by the end of the year and reach the market in 2019, according to the publication.

Electrek’s Take

Jaguar appeared to be quite serious about electric vehicles since they announced that they will add electric powertrains to all new cars by 2020.

But with those kinds of announcements from automakers, it can often mean a focus on hybrids, which is why it is encouraging to see this report, if true, that they are already planning a second all-electric car right after the I-Pace.

At first, we thought the I-Pace could be coming at the $50,000 range, but recent leaks showed that it’s likely going to be closer to $75,000 before incentives. It would make the vehicle compete with the Tesla Model X, albeit being smaller.

Now it looks like they also aim to compete with Tesla’s Model S through an all-electric version of the Jaguar XJ. Aside from Tesla’s own vehicle in the segment, the Jaguar XJ competes with other large luxury sedans like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but it could be the first to go all-electric.
