Meet the Lawyer Trying to Make Big Oil Pay for Climate Change – This attorney is the same one that won $200B+ from the tobacco groups – A report released in mid-November by the Center for International Environmental Law has new evidence that big oil was warned about the risks of global temperature rise nearly 50 years ago. “There seems to be no doubt that the potential damage to our environment could be severe,” explains a 1969 study prepared for the American Petroleum Institute by two Stanford scientists. This is the issue. That hard data was known, yet some of the wealthiest corporations on the planet who were managing one of the most important global resources, decided they needed to slow the progression to change via public manipulation. That’s illegal.
Hanwha Q CELLS- Kalyon Enerji Joint Venture Begins Construction of Photovoltaic Manufacturing Facility – The manufacturing facility will be fully integrated including ingot, wafer, cell and module production. This is probably not a unique facility, but for me it’s still a bit poetic to think that you could bring pure silicon (along with a large number of other inputs) to a single facility and output a solar panel. 500MW of solar panels per year will pour out of this facility.
How a consultant tried to tap the agency’s solar program as ratepayers were shut out – First off, Sammy Roth – the author of this article – kept popping up in my news feed this year. His writing – really, his research and focus – led to cancellations of big time deals that were surrounded by questionable connections. This most recent story highlights how those deals caused issues for regular residential customers – projects so big, that the utility had to work hard behind the lines to make things work for everyone – but still slowed down solar for six months with little communication. Japan Set to Open New Offshore Wind Territories – An island nation should absolutely be surrounded by wind farms to feed its energy needs. That combined with a move toward microgrids across the country mean there will be plenty of energy storage. With Europe, the US, China, and India all pushing offshore wind we might be seeing budding growth of the world’s future largest/second largest source of electricity right here.
Why people really want to move to Idaho but are fleeing its neighbor, Wyoming – Wyoming and West Virginia are stuck to the bottom. Those two, and others in the lower echelon, have something in common: resource dependence. In their case, it’s primarily coal mining. Time to evolve, time to learn to do something different with that land.
