It has been a while since Tesla released a new easter egg hidden in its software, but the latest one (2017.50.2) got a fun new one with a Christmas theme called ‘Santa Mode’ just in time for the holidays.
Originally, Tesla made owners look hard and try new things in order to activate new easter egg, but they released a new one-touch in-car access to all the Easter eggs earlier this year.
Here are some of the previous Easter eggs featured:
- The map showing your Tesla on Mars with a SpaceX spacecraft
- The Tesla control panel shows James Bond’s (now Elon Musk’s) Underwater Lotus
- The new sketch pad Easter Egg
For Tesla owners with the 2017.50.2 software update, now they get this fun new ‘Santa Mode’ Easter egg when accessing the slider.
Here’s a video by Haidar Sami JAN (uploaded with permission):
It looks like one of the most complicated Easter egg to date. It not only replaces the Tesla vehicle with Santa on a sled, similar to the James Bond Easter egg, but it also displays the same render on the Autopilot dashboard and even replaces surrounding cars by reindeer.
Aside from opening the slider, it looks like it can also be activated by saying ‘Ho ho ho’ in voice command.
It’s the second year in a row that Tesla releases a Christmas Easter egg. The one from last year was also fairly impressive as it delivered a synchronized light show with Falcon Wing doors on the Model X.
Update: Now Elon Musk says that there’s another Easter egg inside this Easter egg:
When you get the new Tesla software update, go Ho Ho Ho. There’s an Easter egg inside the Easter egg, but it’s not funny.

Update 2: it looks like someone found the “not funny” part of the Easter egg:
