Nissan’s next-generation Leaf introduced with the 2018 version of the all-electric car featured a much-needed design refresh.
For those who think it wasn’t enough to make the vehicle appealing, Nissan is now considering offering a performance package made by Nismo, Nissan’s in-house performance tuning company.
Nissan design chief Alfonso Albaisa told Autocar:
“The previous Leaf’s design wasn’t popular with the majority of people, so its look couldn’t contribute to sales. The new car is lower, wider and sportier, with the point of this design being to get greater accessibility of the market.”
He added the 2018 Leaf design is better suited for Nismo parts that would make for a “racier” car, which could be offered later.
While the possibility is exciting, it’s not the first time that Nissan talked about adding a Nismo pack to the Leaf.
They unveiled the Leaf Nismo RC concept in 2011 and not much came of it – though Nissan released a special-edition ‘Leaf Aero Style’ just for the Japanese market that was inspired by Nismo.
Nissan does offer Nismo performance packages for a few of its vehicles, but the one for the Leaf was never broadly available.
