There were actually a lot of interesting announcements and comments from Elon Musk at the Tesla’s 2017 Annual Shareholder Meeting yesterday.
We got a Model Y teaser, Model 3 configuration update, and Musk gave more details about Tesla’s plans for new factories.
He also shared some interesting information about Tesla Semi, the company’s heavy-duty electric truck program.
Since announcing that it will be unveiled in late September, Musk already released quite a bit of information about the vehicle – including the first teaser pictured above.
He said that Tesla Semi will have the “highest weight capability with long-range”. The CEO also added that it will out-torque any diesel truck and that it will use “a bunch” of Model 3 electric motors.
At the Tesla’s 2017 Annual Shareholder Meeting yesterday, he confirmed that the vehicle they will be showing off in September will be a working prototype, which they have already been showing to potential customers:
“We have shown it to a number of people who buy heavy duty trucking and they all love it. They just want to know how many can they buy and how soon.”
He added that they are involving them in the design process:
“The biggest customers of the heavy duty Tesla Semi are helping ensure that it is specified to their needs. It’s not a mystery. they already know that it is going to meet their needs because they told us what those needs are.”
Musk thinks it will only be “a question of scaling to make as many as they can”, which should happen within ’18 to 24 months’ according to him. It sounded like he was talking about volume production and that Tesla could possibly make low-volume production of Tesla Semi trucks sooner.
Finally, Musk also made an interesting comment to hype the unveiling planned for September. When mentioning unannounced “things”, he added:
“I really recommend showing up for the semi truck unveiling – maybe there’s a little more than what we are saying here.”
