Electrek morning green energy brief: 1¢/kWh solar power=$10/barrel oil by 2025?, 100% Renewables for the USA & more!

[Editor’s note: We’re trying a new morning green energy briefing which should deliver every day by 9am ET. Please comment below]

1¢/kWh solar power by 2025 could lead toward $10/barrel oil – Thierry Lepercq, head of research, technology and innovation at the French energy company Engie SA thinks that solar power, battery storage & liquid hydrogen brings us “the promise of quasi-infinite and free energy.” He also thinks it will bring us $10/barrel oil by potentially 2025.

Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts submitted a bill to Congress for the United States to move toward 100% Clean, Renewable Energy – While we know the reality of our current political climate, it is a powerful statement for a United States Senator to loudly pronounce that they support a transition to renewable energy. It wasn’t too long ago we had people saying solar panels would drain the sun.

EPA withdraws draft carbon trading model from agency review – Since the agency recognizes the coming political changes of a Trump administration, they’ve made a judgment call to not push forward with certain policies. Our children will have many questions.

The State of Massachusetts moving forward on large energy storage targets – A recent report by the State of Massachusetts says 600MW of energy storage will save the state money and can be done within six years. Today, the state agreed to continue moving toward the energy storage mandate.

A carbon tax in exchange for no corporate income tax? – We seem to be coming to a belief that there is a true cost to CO2 and that the people will force action upon the politicians. With that, we will see more and more political positioning – framing of the arguments.

European solar price record of 4.6¢/kWh  – With an incentive at 1.8¢/kWh and a wholesale market price of about 2.8¢/kWh, a relatively small 20MW solar project has set a European price record. Remember – we’re talking north central Europe for this pricing (not a sunny desert).

Considering residential solar?  will connect you with local contractors. Full disclosure: I get a commission. Tweet me for feedback on pricing.
