Previously only standard with Tesla’s performance models for both the Model X and S, and for the Model X with a 90 kWh battery pack and 6 or 7-seat configuration, now the ‘Smart Air Suspension’ is made standard on all versions of the Model X – increasing the base price of the SUV to $76,500.

By removing the coil suspension option on the Model X entirely and on the Model S P100D, it means that it is discontinued on most of Tesla’s vehicle trims.

Tesla describes the ‘Smart Air Suspension’ option:

Add the ability for your Model X to adjust vehicle height for better handling, efficiency and ride comfort. Using the touchscreen, you can raise or lower Model X when entering a steep driveway, navigating snow, or unloading passengers and belongings. Using GPS location detection, Model X will remember and re-apply setting automatically.

It offers a lot of advantages over a coil suspension that makes even more sense in the Model X since it can tow and you are not necessarily looking for the sportier feel of a coil suspension in a SUV.

But it’s also $2,500 more expensive and if it ever breaks outside of the warranty, it will definitely be more expensive to repair or replace.

What is particularly interesting is that Tesla has yet to produce the Model X with a 5-seat configuration as far as we know, even pushing hard for those who chose a 5 seater to change their configuration, which leads us to believe that they never produced a Model X with a coil suspension and now they never will unless they change the options.
