BMW’s entry-level EV was spotted testing with a Neue Klasse design that looks more like the new iX3, just smaller.

BMW revamps the iX1 with Neue Klasse style

BMW introduced the iX1 in 2022 as its smallest, most affordable electric SUV. As part of its revamped lineup, BMW’s entry-level EV is due for an overhaul.

The next-gen iX1 will be one of 40 new or refreshed models that BMW plans to launch through 2027, updated with its Neue Klasse design and technology.

While automakers traditionally introduce a mid-cycle facelift, BMW appears to be moving straight to a second-generation model built on the Neue Klasse EV platform.

A camouflaged iX1 prototype was spotted racing around the Nürburgring by @Wilco blok, offering a sneak peek at the new design. Although it’s still disguised, it appears to adopt BMW’s new “Face,” trading its traditional oversized Kidney Grille for a slimmer, minimalist look.

From what’s shown, the new iX1 essentially looks like a baby iX3, moving away from its current ICE-derived design.

The new iX1 will also use BMW’s dedicated Neue Klasse EV platform, rather than the current platform it shares with the gas-powered X1.

As such, it will offer significant improvements in driving range, efficiency, and charging speeds. BMW introduced the 2026 iX1 eDrive20 and iX1 xDrive30 earlier this year with WLTP ranges of up to 512 km (318 miles) and 417 km (259 miles), respectively.

The interior will get a Neue Klasse overhaul, bringing more advanced tech, software, and plenty of digital screens.

BMW’s Neue Klasse interior setup includes a 17.9″ central touchscreen, a newly designed steering wheel, and its Panoramic Vision 3D Head-Up Display that stretches across the dashboard.

During its Capital Market Day on September 29, BMW revealed plans to launch a new fully electric entry-level model from the Neue Klasse in 2028. The new entry-level EV is expected to arrive as the i1, a sedan sibling to the iX1.

BMW has no plans to bring the iX1 to the US, but the new 2027 iX3 and i3 are now on sale, starting at $61,500 each.
