First drive with Tesla Autopilot 2.0’s new ‘silky smooth’ control algorithm and Autopark

While the rollout of Tesla’s latest Autopilot 2.0 update has yet to go wide, some owners have reported getting the update early and they are now testing the new features for the first time.

We get our first look at the latest version of Autopilot 2.0 in a new video.

James Hansbert is one of those lucky owners to get the update (17_22_46) and he posted a quick video, embedded below, of his first drive with it.

As we previously reported, the new update features a new control algorithm for Autosteer and TACC, which CEO Elon Musk described as “smooth as silk”, as well as an upgraded version of automatic emergency braking, automatic perpendicular parking, and automatic display brightness adjustments.

Hansbert’s first drive tried to show some of those features (not automatic emergency braking thankfully), but mostly on single lane roads without center divider, which is still not the Autopilot’s preferred used, but it’s good if you want to test the progress.

We can see some improvements in longitudinal control, the vehicle is not “ping-ponging” between lines as much, but again it’s something that should be tested on highways too. The traffic-aware cruise control also appears to plan braking events smoother in order to come to a complete stop (4:00).

Finally, Hansbert also tested the new Autopark for perpendicular parking (6:00). He stopped the Autopark halfway through the process thinking that it was going to fail. You can judge for yourself, but it looks like it might have been premature since the vehicle wasn’t positioned well enough to back in on the first try and therefore, it was probably going for a three-point back-in, which it actually did on the second attempt (7:00).
