A US startup just cleared a major solid-state battery milestone – production is next

ION Storage Systems says it has hit a key milestone in bringing solid-state batteries out of the lab and into real-world use.

The Maryland-based company announced that its customer has successfully qualified its Cornerstone Cell, making ION the first US solid-state battery technology company to achieve this for its cell performance.

The milestone comes after the company shipped sample cells to companies in the industrial, consumer electronics, and automotive sectors in August 2025.

ION CEO Jorge Diaz Schneider said, “We are the first US company to have passed performance qualification with our customer using our Cornerstone cells and plan production to start here in Maryland. We are excited about the new technologies we are unlocking and look forward to talking to more customers, helping them innovate without the restrictions of lithium-ion batteries.”

ION’s chief technology officer, Dr. Greg Hitz, added, “bringing a solid-state, anodeless battery out of the lab and into the real world is a company-defining moment for ION. Our unique combination of high-temperature stability and performance characteristics stands alone in the battery market.”

ION says its strategy of commercializing in applications where its technology delivers immediate value, versus pursuing EVs first, is paying off.

The approach mirrors how lithium-ion batteries first entered the market decades ago, beginning with smaller electronics before scaling into larger uses like EVs.

Initial demand will be supplied from ION’s facility in Beltsville, Maryland, which is currently being expanded. The company expects production to begin in 2026 with the installation of a new sintering furnace.

ION says future demand will likely require additional production capacity beyond the Beltsville facility, and planning for scaled manufacturing is already underway.
