Tesla Gigafactory 3 is now going up at incredibly fast pace, video shows

Tesla is moving at an incredible pace to build Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai as a new video shows new buildings going up fast.

The Chinese auto market is arguably the most important in the world and local manufacturing is essential to fully take advantage of it.

That’s mainly why Tesla is trying to establish manufacturing capacity by building a factory in Shanghai, but on top of it, the uncertain trade situation between the US and China is also adding an element of urgency.

About 7 months ago, Tesla announced a deal with the Shanghai government to build a wholly owned local factory and only about 5 months ago, they secured the 210-acres of land for Gigafactory 3 in China.

They officially broke ground in January and plan to be done with the building by this summer.

We reported on a video update of the status at the construction site 2 weeks ago and now a new video update shows that construction is progressing at an incredible pace (via 烏瓦):

The structures for several buildings are now coming up and the factory is starting to take shape.

It’s starting to look like something, but it’s also far from the recently unveiled finished design of the factory:

CEO Elon Musk claims that the factory will look like that by the end of the year.

Completing the building is one thing, but Tesla also wants to have vehicle production there by the end of the year.

When first announcing the plant, Tesla said that it expects “construction to begin in the near future” and that it “will take roughly two years” until they start volume production with a planned capacity of 200,000 units and “then another two to three years before the factory is fully ramped up to produce around 500,000 vehicles per year for Chinese customers.

They want to produce 3,000 Model 3 vehicles at Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai by the end of the year.
