Electric GT will charge its Tesla Model S P100D racecars with 20 CHAdeMO chargers instead of Superchargers

After unveiling their racetrack-ready Tesla Model S P100D last week, Electric GT announced today a partnership with MAGNUM CAP, a charging station manufacturer, to provide the charging equipment for the upcoming first season of the new all-electric and all-Tesla racing championship.

The company wrote in a press release:

There will be 20 CHAdeMO-standard fast charger DC units, which will provide around 55 kW/h of power to each EGT race-prepared Tesla Model S P100D for season one.

20 chargers will mean one for each car and two for each team. It also means that they will have to use charging adapters since there’s no direct connector for the CHAdeMO standard on the Tesla Model S.

Maybe they should have tried to get their hands on the rare mobile Tesla Superchargers (picture via /r/TeslaMotors on Reddit):

Those units would be perfect to charge Electric GT’s Teslas since they are made to be moved around and therefore, the championship could move them from track to track. The base of the charger is made so a forklift can move it around.

They would be able to get about the same charge rate as the CHAdeMO when charging two cars at the same time.

At the end of the day, it might have come down to the price. While Tesla has been known to sell Superchargers to private users, those specific mobile Superchargers have only been seen being used temporarily when Superchargers were disabled or during construction.

The price is not public, but rumors of anything between $40,000 and $60,000 have circulated.

Instead, Electric GT will have to use Tesla’s $450 CHAdeMO adapter on each car in addition to whatever they are paying for Magnum Cap’s charging stations.

With the kind of performance they are expecting to get from their Model S P100D Ludicrous, Electric GT will need a lot of electricity during its races: Electric GT unveils stripped-down Tesla Model S P100D with 2.0-sec 0 to 60 mph acceleration
