Hyperloop One interested in using its system for underwater transportation

Hyperloop One, formerly Hyperloop Tech, who we have seen demonstrate their propulsion mechanism and showcase their ‘tube deformer,’ has now has stated their interest in implementing the high-speed transportation system underwater for the movement of cargo shipments.

According to Business Insider, Hyperloop One has a new and ‘outside of the box’ proposal for the use of their system. In short, the idea would be to move ports out, approximately, 10 miles from the shore and have the cargo ships dock “like an oil platform,” unload the shipment, then have the Hyperloop bounce back and forth between the coast and docking station which would mitigate the congestion that most high-traffic ports experience.

One of Hyperloop One’s board members, Peter Diamandis, believes this to be a great opportunity for real estate development because of all the space it would free up on the coast. Diamandis goes further into detail explaining the vision in utilizing the system for underwater transportation.

In Long Beach, near where I live, it is a beautiful California coastline that is basically covered with ports or cargo containers and ships. Imagine if you could regain all of that coastline for parks and homes and beaches by taking the port and putting the port 10 miles off shore

Further, he makes the statement that…

Conceptually, I think one of the things that’s interesting about the future is there’s a lot of underutilized space underground. And I think one of the areas the Hyperloop can become an expert in is tunneling technology in the future.

Finally, he [Diamandis] states that there have been talks about using the underwater Hyperloop for transporting people too, and that the most likely place to pilot it would be in Norway and Sweden through the waterways.
