Tesla drivers are being caught speeding at a much higher rate than most in the Netherlands

Interesting data about speeding tickets in the Netherlands showed that electric vehicle drivers, and Tesla drivers specifically, are being caught speeding at a much higher rate than most other drivers.

According to the new report from national statistics office CBS (via Dutch News), around 66% of plug-in electric vehicle drivers have received a speeding ticket over the last year – making them the most likely to get a ticket out of every type of powertrain.

In comparison, only 28% of gas-powered vehicles drivers and 46% of diesel vehicle drivers received tickets during the same period.

Tesla drivers are the ones pushing the average higher for electric vehicle drivers since CBS says that about 75% of the roughly 9,000 Dutch Tesla drivers have received speed tickets over the last year.

The statistics agency shared the data without giving any explanation for the results. The Dutch authorities have given 5.8 million speeding tickets over the period.

Tesla vehicles do have a significant top speed of 155 mph, but they are better known for their quick acceleration than for driving fast since the latter results in a significant drop in efficiency and therefore, range.

Nonetheless, the performance of Tesla vehicles is the most likely explanation for those high numbers.

I’ve never had this issue myself, but I’ve heard other Tesla drivers say that the lack of engine noise at high speeds makes some of them unaware of how fast they are going.

I feel like the speedometer is always preferable to the sound, but that’s just me.

Also, I don’t know if they have something like Waze in the Netherlands, but it sounds like they could use it.
