Tesla starts production of new Model 3 color, shares images of paint robot

Just over a month ago, Tesla updated Model 3 options and pricing, including adding a color: Obsidian black.

Tesla is now starting production of the new Model 3 color and is sharing images of its Model 3 paint robot.

According to an email Elon Musk sent to employees in June, the paint shop was still a bottleneck for Tesla to achieve a production rate of 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week.

He said that it needed “radical improvements.”

The automaker has been producing Model 3 vehicles in batches of different colors to streamline the production.

At first, Tesla limited the number of Model 3 colors and only made black standard – everything else comes with a premium.

In June, Tesla added the popular Obsidian Black, but it had yet to deliver a vehicle with the color 6 weeks later.

Now we are getting reports from Model 3 buyers being alerted that their Obsidian Black Model 3’s are going into production – including my own:

It also means that Tesla is going to soon start Model 3 Performance deliveries in Canada. Tesla’s inside sale team told me that my car is coming off the production line next week and then starts its journey to Canada.

As it starts production of the new, Tesla shared today images of the Model 3 paint robot:

The cow and robot emoticons tell the whole story of those images.

Electrek’s Take

I am glad to finally have news about my order over a month after confirming it.

Tesla generally produces vehicles in batches for different markets and we have seen the company register massive batches of dual motor Model 3’s.

It leads me to believe that Tesla is likely to also plan other deliveries of Model 3 Performance or even non-Performance all-wheel-drive in Canada. The same thing goes for the Obsidian Black Model 3 for all the different versions and markets.
