Tesla is working on a ‘Tesla mini-car’, says Elon Musk

In the latest episode of ‘is Elon Musk joking?’, the CEO says that they are working on a ‘mini-Tesla’ that works for adults.

Now what does that mean exactly?

Musk has often tweeted crazy things that sounded like jokes but turned out to be actual projects.

Like when he tweeted that he planned to open an “old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in Los Angeles” and Tesla already acquired a location for the restaurant. Or when he said that he would launch a Tesla Roadster in space and actually did it.

Now he is talking about the automaker working on some sort of a ‘Tesla mini-car’:

The Twitter user was inquiring about a Model X Radio Flyer toy car. The toy manufacturer already made a ‘Tesla Model S for kids’, but it never released a Model X version.

Instead of answering the question, Musk claimed that Tesla is working on a ‘Tesla mini-car’ in which adults will be able to “squeeze in”.

The current Model S Radio Flyer is only rated for ages 3 to 8 and a weight capacity of 81 lbs. The $500 EV comes with a standard 130 Wh battery pack, which can easily be swapped (similar to the battery swap system of the Gogoro scooters), and a premium 190 Wh battery is also available for $60.

As we previously discussed, it’s a great way to convert kids into Tesla fans and EV enthusiasts at a young age. The vehicle charges just like a regular EV so it makes for a good learning experience about EV ownership experience and charging infrastructure.

The toy has been part of the prizes in Tesla’s latest rounds of the referral program.

Now it sounds like Musk is talking about making a bigger version of it, but it’s unclear what that would look like as a vehicle that can fit and be driven by an adult.

That’s if he is not just joking though historically, that has never been the case about Tesla products outside of Easter Eggs.
