Tesla will allow owners to request the latest software update, Elon Musk says

Tesla’s over-the-air software updates are one of the biggest advantages that the automaker has over its competition, but it can also be frustrating for some owners because of Tesla’s particular way of rolling out new updates in batches.

Now the company has apparently a solution.

The automaker notoriously takes its time to roll out new updates to all the vehicles across its fleet.

It’s unclear exactly what is the actual method to determine the ranking of the batches, but it often results in the same owners having to wait a long time between updates – and often having to skip some.

For example, our publisher Seth Weintraub has yet to get the new update with the significant Autopilot improvements on his Model X with Autopilot 2.0.

But that might not be an issue soon since Tesla CEO Elon Musk now says that they will add a feature that will allow owners to “request” the latest software version:

Previously, the only thing that could result in being pushed a new update other than having your number picked in the unknown queue was to connect to the wifi of a Tesla service center.

It has never been confirmed to be an actual solution, but there are several anecdotal pieces of evidence that seem to indicate that it works.

Anyway, it will certainly be a welcomed feature for the owners who seem to repeatedly be at the end of the queue – though they might also be at the end of the queue for the update that will bring this new “request latest update” feature.
