Tesla expands its Model 3 display car fleet to 5 more stores

Starting today, Tesla is expanding its Model 3 display car fleet to 5 more stores in 4 states – almost doubling the growing fleet of display vehicles for the new EV.

Two weeks ago, Tesla added Model 3 display cars to two stores in California, the showrooms in the Century City Mall in LA and Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto.

Those were the two first Model 3 display cars and they attracted large crowds and people had to wait in long lines to see the Model 3,

Last weekend, the company expanded the Model 3 display car fleet to its New York City showroom in Manhattan’s Meatpacking district, its Boylston Street showroom in Boston, its Miami store, and two more stores in California.

A similar situation happened on the East Coast during the first weekend with the display cars.

Now the Model 3 display fleet is going to San Diego, Dallas, Washington DC, Newport Beach (fashion island mall) and Scottsdale starting at 10am today.

Tesla is inviting local Model 3 reservation holders to come see the car in person.

The automaker previously said that they are bringing the vehicle to new locations based on the demand (number of reservations) is the highest for the Model 3.

Electrek’s Take

If the Model 3 display car rollouts in California and on the East Coast are any indication, it looks like things should be manageable today if you want to go see the car during working hours, but things could get crazy during the weekend.

People reported wait times of over an hour at some stores during the last two weekends. Plan accordingly if you want to go see the car at those new stores.

As we discussed on the latest episode of the Electrek Podcast on Friday, even though the 400,000+ backlog of Model 3 reservations is already impressive, it could very well only be the tip of the iceberg.

The backlog was reached mostly sight-unseen, but now that the vehicle is in production and reviews are almost all praising it, I expect that the demand will increase significantly.

And now that the vehicle is hitting the showrooms, many of which are located in high traffic areas, it could likely expand the Model 3’s reach beyond Tesla fans and EV enthusiasts. Exciting times.
