SolarEdge unveils new home electric car charger integrated with a solar inverter

SolarEdge, an Israel-based tech company, unveils today a new product that merges the worlds of residential solar and electric vehicles.

The company announced its new home electric car charger integrated with a solar inverter.

Tesla hinted at such a product last year when CEO Elon Musk said that the company was preparing to unveil a new “Tesla charger” with its solar roof and second generation Powerwall, but the new product was missing from the event.

Now SolarEdge, which was Tesla’s inverter partner for the first generation Powerwall, beat them to it with the world’s first inverter-integrated electric vehicle EV charger.

It can charge from both the grid and a solar array:

“Based on patent-pending technology, the EV charger is embedded into SolarEdge’s HD-Wave inverter and leverages its solar boost mode. This mode utilizes both grid and PV to charge at 9.6kW (40 Amp) Level 2 charging, which is up to six times faster than standard Level 1 charging. If PV is not available, the inverter-integrated EV charger will use grid power to charge at 7.6kW (32 Amp) Level 2 charging, which is up to five times faster than standard Level 1 charging.”

The new charger will be able to work with Time-of-Use (TOU) rates in order for EV owners to charge at the lowest rate possible on top of using the excess energy from their solar array.

Guy Sella, CEO and Chairman of SolarEdge, commented on the new product:

“SolarEdge is dedicated to developing innovative solutions for increasing the use of renewable energy and cost savings for our customers and end users. Adding EV charging to our growing-range of products further enables system owners to easily manage their energy needs.”

Unfortunately, there’s still no pricing information, but SolarEdge says that it will be available by the end of the year and it will come with a 12-year warranty.
