Record-holding Tesla Model S P100D with stripped-down interior cuts 360lbs

Last month, the Tesla Model S P100D 1/4-mile record was broken on three separate occasions in a single week. The folks over at the Tesla Racing Channel held the record by removing the frunk (front trunk).

Now they went a step further and removed most of the interior to cut 360 lbs.

Without the frunk, the vehicle has been running a quarter-mile in 10.44 @ 124.21 mph and 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.3 seconds. It will be interesting to see what the vehicle can do now without almost the whole interior.

When it comes to the frunk, Tesla’s service can remove the liners for the owner if they are no using the compartment, but the rest is not something the service team can perform.

Tesla Racing Channel said that it was fairly easy and it can be put back together within a few days. They removed almost all interior panels, the back seat, and replaced the front seats with aluminum racing seats.

Here’s what the front and back look like:

The P100D to start with was a base version without option in order to keep the weight as low as possible. It was weighing in at 4,960 lbs.

After removing the interior, it coming in at 4,600 lbs. That can make a big difference on the racetrack.

Here’s the Tesla Racing Channel explaining the modifications:

Of course, that’s only for hobby racing, but stripping down Tesla’s Model S P100D is also becoming a big part of professional racing for Electric GT.

The all-electric and all-Tesla racing series Electric GT recently unveiled their stripped-down P100D racecar.  By stripping the interior and replacing body panels with biocomposite materials, they claim that they managed to reduce the weight of a P100D by 1,100lbs – reportedly reducing 0-60 time to 2 seconds flat.

We should see those cars on the track for the first time in November in France when the series starts its first season.
